New Concrete at the Edge of the Gulf

Starbase is one of the newest cities in Texas, and much of its concrete is new too. Wikipedia says voters approved incorporation on May 3, 2025, and the city was formally incorporated on May 20, 2025. It also reports a community center, school, clinic and more housing under construction. Our epoxy flooring in Starbase is built for that kind of new slab, set on a peninsula only 3 feet above sea level and about 20 miles east of Brownsville.

New slabs need time and prep

Fresh concrete is still drying out for weeks after it is poured. Coat it too soon and moisture trapped inside can push the coating off. New slabs are also usually troweled smooth and hard, which a coating cannot grip well. Our approach: 1. We ask when the slab was poured and test its moisture. 2. We diamond grind the surface to open it up. 3. We treat control joints and any early shrinkage cracks. 4. We pick the system based on the readings, not the calendar.

If a slab needs more time, we tell you and come back.

A long history with storms

The village here began in 1967 as Kennedy Shores, where about 30 ranch-style houses were built. Wikipedia says Hurricane Beulah struck later that year and destroyed the restaurant and the public utility systems. At 3 feet of elevation, storm surge and standing water are a real concern. A coating will not stop a flood. It does make a garage or shop much easier to wash out afterward, and it keeps salt water from soaking into bare concrete.

From village to city

Wikipedia says the population was 26 in both 1990 and 2000, and by 2008 only six permanent residents remained. SpaceX began buying land in the area in 2012 and picked Boca Chica for its South Texas launch site in 2014. The city now counts about 500 residents. That growth means most slabs here are either very old or very new. Older floors from the early ranch-style houses can have cracks, salt damage and patchwork repairs. We grind them down, repair what we can and tell you plainly if a slab is past saving. New slabs get the moisture testing and grinding described above.

Salt air and blowing sand

The city sits just south of the South Bay lagoon and about 2 miles north of the mouth of the Rio Grande. Salt rides in on the wind and on tires, boots and gear. A sealed floor keeps salty grit on the surface where you can hose it off. For garages that stay open to the breeze, we use a UV-stable polyaspartic topcoat.

Commercial and work floors

Wikipedia notes that the FAA approved up to 25 Starship launches per year in 2025, and new facilities are going up with the city's growth. Workshops, storage buildings and service areas need floors that handle carts, tools and frequent cleaning. We install thicker commercial systems with chemical-resistant topcoats and slip-resistant texture where floors get wet.

Starbase Questions

How soon can you coat a newly poured garage slab?

New concrete needs time to dry. We test the slab's moisture and only schedule the coating when the readings are in range. The exact wait depends on the pour, the weather and the mix.

Will salt air damage the coating?

Salt is much harder on bare concrete than on a sealed floor. We use a UV-stable topcoat and suggest rinsing salt and sand off the floor regularly.

Do you coat commercial and work floors in Starbase?

Yes. We install heavier systems for workshops, storage and service areas, with chemical-resistant topcoats and added grip where floors get wet.
